It’s crazy Weber never won a Norris.

But he was consistently among the top 2-3 d-men in the league for about a decade. That certainly counts for something.

Maybe defensively, but Staal has the edge offensively.

Both cup-winning captains.

I just think it’s closer than people are realizing.

Staal wasn’t really better offensively though. He was a better goalscorer, but Getzlaf was a better point producer and play driver. Staal was much healthier, but also had a lot of meh seasons.

Their top 20 point finishes:

Getzlaf: 2,6,10,11,13,15,17
Staal: 6,7,11,15

Top 20 in points per game:

Getzlaf: 3,6,6,8,9,12,15,16,16
Staal: 8,10,19,20

Their best 10 year adjusted seasons:

Staal: 773 GP, 349G, 429A, 778 PTS
Getzlaf: 696 GP, 217G, 562A, 779 PTS

Per 82 games that comes to:

Staal: 37G, 45A, 82 PTS
Getzlaf: 26G, 66A, 92 PTS

There’s not a massive difference between them, but Getzlaf was more consistently elite imo, and was just a more effective overall player, particularly 5v5.

Staals peak was very short. I thought Fleury would get more love, elite franchise goalie for most of his career.

I wouldn’t call Fleury elite for more than the odd season. He was generally a good, above average goalie, but replaceable, and also had some truly terrible playoff performances in the middle of his career. It’s partly based on how I’d structure a team, but he wouldn’t even be in my top 10 here given the number of top line forward/top pair defensemen available

Neutrally speaking Getzlaf, Weber, Kesler, Staal and Perry to round out the top 6

Staal had the higher point total but that was in the heavily inflated 05-06 season. Getzlaf had the much better point finishes relative to his peers. Getzy was better offensively and defensively.

The only really elite year Fleury had was the Vezina win in the Covid shortened year where he played all of 32 games.

If Fleury had have been drafted the the Coyotes or Panthers as opposed to the Penguins nobody would look at him in the same way they do currently.

I was torn between Staal and Getzlaf but went with Staal by a hair. Both were impactful, 1000+ point, 1000+ game power forwards.

Staal had 8 seasons of 70+ points and had 53 in 48 during the 2013 lockout shortened season. (Man, the NHL needs to stop doing that shit...) 6 years with 30+ goals, 3 of those with 40+.

Getzlaf had 6 seasons above 70+ points, then 69 points in 66 games one year, 49 in 44 games during the 2012 lockout, and 61 points in 56 games in 2017-18. Only 1 30+ goal season but 8 seasons with 50+ assists.

I don't think you could go wrong with either choice.

You're not wrong. Part of me wonders if Staal's reduced production in the middle of his Carolina run had a lot to do with team construction. After Carolina won the cup the wheels started to fall off the wagon. They win the cup in 2006 where Frantisek Kaberle is their top scoring D. Then in 2007 their top scoring D is Mike Commodore? Then for years after their top pair was Joe Corvo and Joni Pitkanen. Not exactly cream of the crop. Goaltending from Cam Ward was also pretty inconsistent. And weren't there some injuries that kept piling up for Staal?

Meanwhile Anaheim had Beauchemin, Pronger and Niedermayer on D with Giguere and Hiller in net. Then later on Fowler, Lindholm, Visnovsky at one point and Freddy Anderson and John Gibson in net. It was much better luck of the draw on defense for Getzlaf. He also had Corey Perry when he was at his absolute best and I don't think that Staal ever had a winger that good in his career. Hell, Bobby Ryan before his mitts got busted was probably better than any of the wingers Staal had.

If the tables were turned and you put Staal on Anaheim and Getzlaf in Carolina I think the stats would also be flip flopped.

I didn’t change my vote from Getz but I agree that Staal got the shaft leading some pretty meh Carolina teams.
