Should have been able to build the right support group around Karlsson, Stone, Zibanejad, Hoffman, Pageau... and the young players incoming (Dzingel, Chabot, White, etc)
What really sank the old core is injuries. Methot, MacArthur, Michalek, Ryan, Turris, Cowen and Karlsson all haven't been the same players after some of their (multiple) injuries. And also of course, the problem that occured between Karlsson and Hoffman that might have divided the room.
Trading Zibanejad for a "rental" then for "futures" certainly didn't help. Then trading Hoffman for basically nothing as well. Etc.
So instead of investing in extending the core players and support them correctly, we sold them so we saved a lot on salaries. However, the price to pay for that is several years of hardcore suckage.
And anyway even if we fixed the "holes (Mainly Methot and MacArthur), I think that without the right coaching staff it's a moot point anyway, there will always be a limit to the peak your team can reach.
Even with our excellent drafting, there's no guarantee this rebuild will be successful because building a team is a recipe and Dorion hasn't built a roster that can compete with other NHL teams yet, not even close.
Of course, I really like our U-25 talent, we are stacked with it having drafting high for a few years and having "transformed" the previous great assets we had into more prospects/draft capital. But we will have to "organize" that talent because if not, you're in the Sabres/Oilers territory (who also have/had a lot of young talent)
