Is Bennett going to make the club or is he getting sent back to the OHL for more seasoning?

Millions is reporting that the lines for tomorrow are Gaudreau-Colborne-Byron, Glencross-Monahan-Hudler, Bouma-Backlund-Raymond, Bollig-Stajan-McGrattan.

I don't really understand where Hartley is coming from with those lines. They look like he just used a randomizer. The success Gaudreau has when he plays with Monahan is for a reason, they compliment each other. Colborne needs a Glencross on his wing and Monahan needs a Gaudreau on his wing. I just...I just don't understand this team sometimes.

I like these lines, actually. I've been hoping that Hartley would think to use Stajan as the fourth line centre. He was awesome when he played there a few seasons ago. Jackman-Stajan-Nonstopolous was the best fourth line in hockey.

I am a little surprised that Colborne isn't being played with a defensive specialist, because in the preseason he's been a heavy minus as a centre from what I can remember.

Yeah, why couldn't it be Glencross-Backlund-Raymond, Bouma-Colborne-Byron? Those lines make much MUCH more sense.

Well, I think they like Colborne's ability to forecheck, and they want Gaudreau with Colborne because it will mean (hopefully) more chances in the offensive end. Colborne and Byron are two guys who are tough to handle on a dump in.

Don't know if this is posted else where, but it seems Kris Russel has been named our 2nd assistant captain with glencross. Odd choice IMO since I would have multiple people ahead of Russel whom I would give it to but no real complaints I guess

I pointed it out during a pre-season GDT. I think it's a really strange choice, but we don't really know the dynamics of the room, I guess. I would put it on Backlund without giving it too much thought, but I guess they know better.

You are right about the dynamics but it is interesting. I would have had Hudler, Backlund, Stajan and Wideman ahead of Russel.
Stajan is who I would have given it too if it was my choice. He seems to be great with the kids, is technically a veteran in this league and he just signed an extension with us to boot so he should be here for a while

didn't we have 4 alternate captains at one point? Home and away different players wear the A's

Also one other thing no one's pointed out yet... there's no David Jones and no Devin Setoguchi in that lineup.

Meritocracy.

Yeah, not a fan of those lines either.

#Flames give Kris Russell an "A" as alternate captain. He earned it. Fine player..leads by example.

CALGARY, AB -- The Calgary Flames announced today their opening day roster for the 2014-15 NHL season.

After assigning centre Markus Granlund to the Adirondack Flames of the American Hockey League, the Flames active roster now sits at 23. Defenceman Corey Potter and centre Sam Bennett will start the season on the injured non-roster list.

I wonder if Stajan wasn't given one in the event that Treliving doesn't feel that he's in the long term plans. After all, Monahan, Backlund and Colborne look to be a more than adequate top 9 and Bennett will be coming next year.

I think Russell is being added, there was nothing in there about removing A's. So I am pretty sure we will have 4 players with A's, 2 on the road and 2 at home. We did it a couple years ago and is something a lot of teams do now.
