The NHL has done well with selling tickets at all the outdoor games the past 10 years but they may have a real headache in trying to sell tickets in South Bend, Indiana next year. Up until now every outdoor game in the US had teams that were a reasonable drive to the venue but Boston is 900 miles from South Bend and that drive in late December is risky because of possible lake effect snow from Buffalo to Toledo on I-90. I-80 is an alternative but still risky that time of year. Chicago is...

Outside of the Miracle on Ice (the guys drafted/eligible from 76-81), the greatest era for USA Hockey was 1987-1992. I am talking specifically about drafts in a row. That is the era that brought much of the 1996 World Cup Gold winners together, and the core group for 1998/2002 Olympics as well. These are the years that brought us Mike Modano, Jermey Roenick, Doug Weight, Billy Guerin, Keith Tkachuk, Derian Hatcher, Bryan Smolinski, Tony Amonte, etc, etc etc.. No doubt in my mind the greatest...

Hey everybody -- inspired by that ESPN article from a few days ago, I decided I'd make my own rankings. Hope you enjoy. Poile - NSH (The master of re-signings. Jarnkrok, Forsberg, Arvidsson, Ekholm, Turris are all signed to incredible deals. The guy can build a helluva team and has the guts to trade.) Yzerman - TB (There's a reason that Team Canada always hires Stevie Y. Those Hedman, Kucherov, Stamkos, Vasilevskiy, and Stralman deals are insane and he's amazing at getting depth players...

Seen a lot of talk about the level of play and players in the Olympics and I can understand the disappointment for the NHL's decision of not letting the NHL players go, however people who can't enjoy this tournament are NHL fans not hockey fans. It is always funny to see how (mostly NA fans) belittle the leagues and guys playing in Europe or even AHL, you guys realize that it's not like the talent level just suddenly drops drastically after those what, 700-800 guys that play in the NHL? In...

Yeah, that's his real name. OUTSIDE of his contract of course, and even then there comes negative talk with that.... Going into the playoffs and such there will be no EIchel talk, so felt like making this thread to discuss the injustice that is his pro-career to this point. I had to ask who else has had a rougher ride then a star of this calibre from the beginning of his career? You could even call it BUFFALO luck. But look, I'm not one to cry because every team has a history of being...

What sports and events that are not in the Winter Olympics do you think should be added? First a few quick notes: The IOC defines the following: Sport: All events operated by a governing body (ex. skating) Discipline: Basically what we would call a sport in everyday language (ex. short track speed skating) Event: A single medal event (ex. Men's 500m) Getting a new sport in would be most difficult, as the IOC would need to recognize the governing body New disciplines and events are...
A small extract of the weighted rankings for the 1st round (higher weight put on ISS and McKenzie).
There is a misconception on HF that keeps popping up this season about the Atlantic division. While it is a weak division overall, the misconception is that the top 3 teams (and Toronto more specifically) are where they are points wise because they get to “beat on” the five other Atlantic teams, all of which are struggling to one degree or another. This has been repeated numerous times on these boards and is used to disregard the top 3 Atlantic teams because they supposedly “benefit from...

In my day job we have a tool called a pre-mortem. We discuss what could go wrong before making a significant change to a strategy or process. I am using a similar idea here. Basically, this is a prediction of what a "re-draft" in 2023 might say. The list is of players outside the consensus top 15--because it is hard to define a sleeper that everyone thinks is among the elite. 1. Martin Kaut. He is just now making a few lists as a late first-rounder. Given his size, success in international...

Here are the top ten drafted prospects as voted on by members. 1. Elias Pettersson - Vancouver Canucks He's just a natural. Great smarts on both ends, awesome hand-eye and passing ability, controls the puck so well. No real electrifying weapons, just so very smart and so gifted, just natural instincts and knack for reading the game and creating chances. I dunno if John Tavares is a reasonable style comparison, but someone like that who hasn't got elite skating or a rocket of a shot but...

The goal of this project is pretty simple. I set out to create a complete map of the aftershocks of the epic 1992 trade of Eric Lindros from Quebec to Philadelphia. That trade set off a domino effect of transactions which has greatly impacted all 31 franchises over the past 26 years. While it’s true that there have been other trades which have created a chain of other moves around the league, I’m quite convinced at this point that the Lindros trade is unique in its breadth and depth of...

Interesting question I think. To me video review has been a complete failure. The point is to get calls right, now they have created more confusion than they have ever helped. Players are frustrated and so are fans. At least when a ref made a wrong call on the ice people understood that they are just human and miss stuff, but people don't have patients for when you have minutes to review and still get it wrong. Here are a couple of the main reasons I think it has been a failure. 1. The...
